Foil Stamping

Embossing
Die Cutting

Maximum image area: 20 1/2" x 28"

Maximum sheet size: 22" x 31"

Hot stamping combines the texture and sculptural interest of embossing with vivid color and the reflective effects of foil. Most common are gold and silver foils, but semi-matte and glossy metallics are also available in many colors, ranging from white to intense primary hues. There are also pigmented foils, dusted foils for a somewhat softer image, plus fluorescents, woodgrains, holographic, prismatic, and marbled foils.

Hot stamping involves the same heat/pressure process used for embossing, but goes one step further by transferring an opaque foil material to the surface of the paper. A super-thin ribbon of foil is fed into the press, and it releases its pigment onto the paper when the sheet is compressed against the heated surface of the die. Hot stamping combines neatly with embossing, in which case a combination die can be used to apply foil and emboss in one operation.  A counter is another die made of a material that is the negative image of the metal die. These two dies sandwich the paper between them, and the heat and pressure "iron"  the design permanently in. Foils can also be stamped on top of one another to create different colors and textural effects.

Tint Embossing is a transparent foil applied during embossing to enhance the emboss.

Hot stamping does have some specific limitations:

1. Certain colors of stock can be discolored by the heat  and pressure  of the process.

2. Foil colors are not organized according to the Pantone Matching System, so PMS matches are not  possible.

3. Pigment foils may appear slightly darker or lighter, depending upon the color of the paper  to  which they are applied.

4. Avoid non-oxidizing inks, inks  containing waxes or silicones,  heavy ink coverage and large  amounts of offset sprays in  stamping areas, because they  will effect bonding of the foil to  the paper.

It is wise to let us help in the planning stages of a project, to ensure feasibility of a design. This will help you to plan the best methods, look for economical solutions, and facilitate a smooth progression of processes and good registration.
